Step 1: Create Your Account and Avatar
When you first start the game, you need to create your own avatar. You can design it to look like almost anything or anyone you want. Then, you'll enter your age and create a username. Make sure your username follows the rules. If you can't think of one, you can use the random generator.
Step 2: Complete the Tutorial
After making your account, you must play through the mandatory tutorial called "Orientation." It's a good idea to finish it quickly. Once done, you get a watch for traveling to different rooms. It's recommended to go to your "Dorm Room" first instead of joining a public room right away.
Step 3: Your Personal Space
Dorm Room
This is your own private room where you can customize your character, play around, and practice.
Maker Pen
You can find this tool in your backpack menu. It lets you build almost anything in your dorm, but it can be complicated, so watching a separate tutorial is helpful.
Rec Center
You can go here from your dorm. It's a main social hub to meet and talk with other players.
Step 4: Exploring and Playing Games
Open your watch and click "Play" to see thousands of user-created rooms. They include art, horror, player-vs-player (PVP), and more.
Rec Room Originals
A great place to start is with Rec Room Originals. These are games made by Rec Room. Playing them helps you level up faster, earn clothing items, and get reward boxes, which get better as you level up.
Other Useful Features
Communication
You can use voice chat (set to always on or push-to-talk in your watch settings) or text chat (on VR, Xbox, PC, etc.) to talk with others.
Your Backpack
This menu in your watch contains:
- Consumables: Like food, which you can share with friends.
- Skins: To change how your items look.
- Camera: The best way to take pictures of your adventures.
Be Part of the Community
The most important part of Rec Room is the community. There are many groups, like builders, content creators ("Rectubers"), and PVP players. While you might sometimes meet rude players, most people are friendly and helpful. Getting involved with others is what makes the game fun.
